Pink Eye, The North Pole, and Closed Road

Did I mention the Arave's came down to CO for a visit?  The kids and I were able to meet up with them after visiting the temple on Saturday.  Then on that following Tuesday (the day before the kids started school) Charlie had off so we all met up at Santa's Workshop at the North Pole.  It was one last hurrah to end the summer.  But unfortunately most of us were battling pink eye...not the kind that goes away after a few eye drops.  Nope...the virus kind that lingers around forever.  We were trying so hard to sterilize and keep our germs to ourselves but Martha ended up with it.  Uggh!  Nonetheless we had a great time at the North Pole.

Alayna didn't want to ride this ride...just being stubborn I guess...

so to prove that she was not happy about it, she had to pout the whole time she was on the ride

The three of us were the only brave ones to ride the tallest ferris wheel in the world!  They claim one man saw Texas from up there!  My kids are so brave!

my Kenzie is growing up...she rode the roller coaster for the first time and loved it!!

Charlie didn't give Lulu a choice...he just stuck her on and away they went.
If I remember right, the ride ended in tears.

Even Genie had a fun time riding the train!

The rest of the story....
Colorado Springs had a horrible forest fire last summer, Waldo Canyon Fire.  Mother Nature decided since we didn't get any rain at all last summer, when we really needed it, she would send the rain this summer.  Because of all the rain we've had there has been lots of flash floods on the burn scar, in particular the town of Manitou Springs just outside of CO Springs.  The North Pole is located just north of Manitou Springs.  As we were leaving our fun day at the park, it started to rain.  It was a good heavy downpour.  Right as we were about to turn onto the highway (the only highway through the canyon) to head home they closed the road!  We were sitting at the light waiting to turn and we saw the workers set up the barricade and close the road.  If we had left even 3 minutes sooner we would have been fine!  Uggh!  So we headed on up the canyon to the next town, Woodland Park.  All of us got on our mobile devices to check the weather/traffic reports.  Come to find out, the highway patrol had just enacted, that day, a new policy.  Anytime there was a flash flood warning they automatically closed the road!  So we were totally stuck!  We kept an eye on the sky and saw that the clouds were moving pretty fast so we decided to head back down the canyon to see if they had opened up the road.  Luckily we only ended up waiting about 20 minutes before they opened it up again.  Thankfully we weren't stuck in Woodland Park until 9:00 pm, which is when the flash flood warning was lifted.  What an adventure!
